Internet Addiction Disorder: Fallout Of Modern Technology

Strange it seems, but it is hard to discern that whether our society is becoming more civilized or it is moving towards self destruction. No doubt science has enabled us to lead our lives in much more comfortable ways, but the human nature also has also not hesitated to abuse it. One such modern day bane is internet addiction. In order to get a comprehensive view of internet addiction disorder, we need to look at it with historical and future perspective.

What started as a joke now has become a serious malady or modern times. Ivan Goldberg first circulated a hoax mail stating that those who use internet will suffer from a sort of internet disease. As the digital era took giant strides, the speed of internet kept on increasing. This was coupled by falling prices of laptops and invention on new technologies. This no doubt has eased our lives, but with it the number of people suffering from internet addict disorders kept on increasing. Internet addiction disorder now is most prevalent in developed countries, particularly among youths and teens.

A person who spends most of his waking time in front of computer hooked on to internet and does not have any sort of social life can be labeled as a person suffering from internet addiction disorder. It is mostly found in online gamers and hackers. Even there are people who are online on their social networking site 24 hours a day.

In a nutshell, a person suffering from internet addiction disorder is so dependent on internet that it is impossible for that person to stay normal without logging onto online gaming site, gambling site, auction site or social networking site. If by any chance they steer away from internet, they exhibit mood swings and irritability among other things. Internet addicts need help urgently if they want to lead a normal life.

As is the case with any other type of addiction, internet addiction disorder has physical as well as psychological implications. Psychological implications are abnormal behavior during day time, revered body cycle, and extreme anxiety. Physically, the person becomes obese, develops lifestyle diseases owing to reduced physical activity.

It still can be said that internet addiction disorder is still very limited. But the pace at which it is affecting people is alarming. If something is not done quickly, the day is not far when entire generation will be leading the life of a geek.
