Fighting Teen Smoking

As children reach their teen years, there are certain activities that they are prone to trying as they grow more independent of their parents. Even though they have been taught that smoking is dangerous to their health, they will often try it to feel more grown up, or in response to the peer pressure around them. Teen smoking is a serious issue, as many adults that are addicted to smoking claim to have started when they were in their teen years. The teen smoking developed into a lifelong habit that they find very difficult to quit after years of participating in it and the physical and psychological addiction is firmly in place. There are different programs that help parents to learn how to deal with teen smoking and to equip their children to cope with the peer pressures that they will face during their school careers.

There are some teen smoking issues that come up because the parents smoke. It is difficult to tell a teen not to smoke when one or both of the parents smoke regularly or even at social occasions. The most important aspect of teaching teens not to smoke is to keep the avenues of communication open between the teens and the parents. Even if the parents smoke, they can share the things that affect their health because of smoking and also why it is so difficult for them to stop. Having a teenager who is considering smoking or is starting to smoke can be a reason for the parents to take a serious look at quitting themselves to set an example for their children.

There are also reasons that parents can give their teens who are considering smoking showing them why they should not do it. They can point out that smoking gives them bad breath which will not make them very attractive to friends or to the opposite sex. They can also point out how smoking makes every thing around them smell, such as clothing and cars. Teen smokers will not want to have their complexions marred or have their fingernails or teeth turn yellow, and this can also be a deterrent to them from smoking. For those teens who play sports, pointing out the way that smoking reduces lung capacity and affects their ability to play their favorite sport can also help to deter them from choosing to smoke. There is also the fact that smoking takes a lot of money to support, especially if it becomes a habit. Teen smokers often do not have that kind of cash laying around, with the majority of their earned income going towards gas and entertainment of other sorts.

The Harmful Effects Of Smoking

Many people around the world smoke. They buy packs of cigarettes, go home and smoke them and they give very little thought to the harmful effects smoking has on many different aspects of a person’s life.

So why do people smoke in the first place? Because it feels good. When someone smokes, their nervous system and brain activities undergo an extended period of heightened stimulation from the drugs in it. A person’s heart rate and blood pressure quickly increases. Blood flow to the body’s end points (hands, feet etc.) is reduced, which can cause numbness in those extremities. Another thing that smoking effects is a person’s senses: their olfactory, taste and hunger senses are weakened. Some people even experience dizziness.

And then of course you get to the serious smoking effects: the many ways smoking can physically harm your body. First, smoking has an effect on the lungs. It damages them, causing them to develop scar tissue, blacken or lost function. It can even cause cancer to grow in the lungs as well. But there are many areas in the body that a smoking effect can appear: the throat (throat cancer), heart, eyes, reproductive system (sex organs, urinary tract, and male sperm production), bones and joints, and even the digestive system all suffer effects from smoking, even if that period is only five years or less.

And not all smoking effects are physical. Another smoking effect that nobody ever thinks about is what the smoke actually makes you smell like. Everyone, especially non-smokers, can smell the scent of cigarettes. They cling onto everything from clothes to hair and it’s very hard to get rid of it. In fact, even just one person smoking in a room can have a smoking effect on the entire house – even if nobody has ever smoked in a room, the smell somehow manages to permeate it. (Plus, another smoking effect nobody notices: prolonged smoking in a room leaves a yellow residue on the wall that you have to scrub to get off.

The severity of all of these things depends on a few factors that determine what effect smoking has on a person. For instance, the quantity of cigarettes smoked in a day matters greatly, as does a person’s natural level of resistance to tobacco. How old they were when they started smoking has an effect and so does the actual number of years they have spent smoking.

The Deadly Effects of Cigarette Smoke

If you are a smoker, and even if you just live with someone or are around other people who do, then you should really take the time to learn about cigarette smoke and the devastating effects that it can have on the body. Probably the most dangerous thing of all is that the majority of people out there today don’t even have a clue as to just how serious cigarette smoke is.

Especially if you are a smoker, you are probably not going to want to hear this, but you should always be aware of what you are putting into your body. It is not as though people are forcing other people to smoke, it is just a matter of the problem that once someone starts smoking and becomes addicted to the nicotine and cigarette smoke, it can be incredibly hard for them to stop smoking.

It is more than the fact that cigarette smoke removal from your car is going to be incredibly difficult if not impossible to do, because cigarette smoke is so strong and potent that you would really have to bring it in to a professional cleaner and even then there may be nothing they can do.

There is more importance though than the smoke staining your clothes, car and teeth. There is your health that is in danger here. Cigarettes are the number one cause of several kinds of cancer, including lung cancer, and so you should be thinking about this every time you are lighting up.

Not only are you putting yourself and your own health at risk, but also that of your children if you have any, and they are in the home. A lot of the time smokers make wrong assumptions or just get misguided on things and do not realize that what they are doing is harmful to others as well as to themselves.

For instance, if you are smoking and you think that just by going out on your back deck or outside when you have a smoke and then come back in that you are not causing danger to your children, you are incorrect.

You are actually bringing almost all of the chemicals of the cigarette smoke back in with you, so don’t be fooled. Therefore if you are a smoker you have to realize that you are not only putting yourself at risk but also everyone that you live with as well.

Increase in Smoking Bans

In recent years there have been more and more smoking bans in the country as more and more people have fought to have a smoke free environment. Most places ban public smoking but there are still some private environments where smoking is still acceptable to do. These smoking bans have been implemented so that people who do not smoke are protected from the harmful effects of second hand smoke. Often, when there is smoking allowed in the environment, the air becomes clogged with the smoke, which affects all the people who have to be in that environment. Most of the laws that have been implemented are based on the thought that people can choose to smoke if they want to, polluting their own bodies, but it is not acceptable that they pollute the bodies of others who do not choose to smoke.

Smoking bans have been implemented in most workplaces, however there are still some that have rooms that allow smoking and there are designated areas outside of the building that allow for smoking. When people are travelling, there are also smoking bans in airports, bus stations and train stations. There are usually smoking areas that are designated as such in these travel stations but smoking is usually prohibited every where else on the premises. Sometimes there is smoking that is allowed in bars in these travel stops, but this is not always the case.

Smoking bans in restaurants depend on the state in which the restaurant is located and the preference of the restaurant owner. There are some states that will ban smoking in public places so restaurants are all affected by this. In states that there is not a smoking ban, there is often a restriction put in place by the chain restaurant owners that bans any smoking on the premises. There is also smoking that is still found when there is a nightlife entertainment setting, such as bars or other venues where there is entertainment.

Each state has its own restrictions regarding smoking and laws are always changing in this area, often becoming more restrictive as the years go by and non-smoking in public arenas is more accepted. When there is smoking allowed in public environment, it is always more polite of a smoker to ask the others at the event or at the table if they mind if they smoke, rather than lighting up without consideration of other people's preferences.

Ideas to Stop Smoking

There are many stop smoking programs that are available today, but there are some that do not deliver what they offer and should be checked into before paying money for the programs. The main programs that should be avoided are those that claim that they provide easy, almost instantaneous results from their easy to follow program. There are also programs that offer injections or pills that have secret ingredients that help people to stop smoking without effort on their part and these should be avoided as well. Checking into the Better Business Bureau when choosing a program is also a good idea to see whether the program is registered with them and whether there have been any complaints about the program. Most credible programs charge reasonable fees and will give references of people who have used the program.

There are usually two aspects to stopping smoking that have to be addressed in order to be successful with it. There is the physical aspect of stopping smoking and there is also the mental aspect of it. Therefore, stopping smoking is often made easier when there are patches or gums that are used to decrease the amount of nicotine in the body gradually so that the mental aspects can be addressed in the meantime. There are many different types of nicotine patches and gums to choose from so that the best one can be chosen for that person's system. In order to help with the metal aspects of stopping smoking, there are programs and groups that can help to create an environment of support for the person while they are in the beginning stages when it is the most difficult.

There can be some side effects from using these different nicotine patches and gums and the people using them should follow the directions on these items and talk to the doctor about them to make sure that the right amounts are taken in terms of the amount that the person used to smoke. There can be some headaches, dizziness and racing heartbeat problems when stopping smoking in terms of these nicotine patches. In more extreme reactions, there can be nausea and vomiting. When using nicotine gums to stop smoking, there are other side effects such as mouth sores or throat irritation. In addition, there is the chance that the gum itself would become addictive, so that the individuals using it to stop smoking then end up using the gum afterwards for over a year.

Why You Should Not be Smoking

Everyone knows that smoking is bad for them and that they should not be doing it, but millions of people around the world do it anyway. If you are a smoker, you should really take the time to learn more about smoking, so that you can see just how bad it is for you and learn about all the different reasons as to why you should not be smoking, and why you should quit smoking now.

Smoking does a great deal to your body, some of which you are not even able to see because it is causing damage inside of your body as well. The most noticeable effects of smoking would be wrinkles and fine lines on the face, which especially among women is something that they never want to have to deal with but they will if they are a smoker.

It will also cause your skin to become very dry, and will stain your teeth. People who have been smokers for most of their life usually have very yellow, stained teeth and very bad breath, and even brushing their teeth on a regular basis is not going to be able to help enough with this.

In terms of the most frightening, long-term effects that can occur from you being a smoker, there are a few that are particularly scary, such as lung cancer. This is one of the most common health problems that smokers end up with, because of the tar that is in cigarettes and how it affects the lungs in the body, especially after years of constant smoking.

Once you start to actually learn about what smoking does to your body and why it is so bad for you, it becomes much easier to take that first step and want to quit. Fortunately there are some great stop smoking aids that are available today, if you are unable to do it cold turkey. Just remember that cold turkey is always going to be the best way, even though it is very much the hardest as well.

If you stop cold turkey, even though some people including doctors do not recommend it, you are going to be using a lot of willpower and are going to be a lot less likely to start smoking again in the future if you do it this way than if you start to just cut down bit by bit for instance.

The Correlation Between Smoking and Vision Problems

While it is a known fact that smoking can cause lung cancer and a myriad of other medical conditions, the link between smoking and vision problems has also been confirmed. Here's a look at some of the conditions in which smoking will cause or aggravate problems with your eyesight.

1. Smoking can lead to cataracts. Among the many problems caused by cataracts is the inability to see clearly, difficulty in distinguishing colors, and becoming sensitive to glare. Eventually, intervention through surgical procedures such as Lasik surgery is required.

2. In older men and women, macular degeneration can be caused by smoking. Studies have shown that this condition is prevalent among smokers and is evidenced by two types of AMD or age-related macular degeneration. The first is called atrophic or dry AMD and the second is called exudative or wet AMD. When diagnosed with dry AMD, the retina becomes thin. Conversely, wet AMD causes blood vessels to grow in the retina, which begin to leak blood, causing the macula to become damaged. Lasik surgery is the recommended procedure to correct the problem.

3. Diabetics who smoke are more prone to develop diabetic retinopathy, a condition which causes damage to the blood vessels. In fact, even the optic nerve can be damaged due to smoking.

4. Smokers who have thyroid problems can find their vision deteriorating as well.

5. You may have seen commercials for people who suffer from dry eye. This is due to the decreased production of tears which is essential in keeping the eyes lubricated. Smoking inhibits this lubrication and causes a myriad of symptoms related to dry eyes.

6. Finally, while women are strongly advised not to smoke during pregnancy since it may cause low birth weight as well as premature birth, studies have shown that smoking during pregnancy may also cause the child to develop meningitis later on. This condition can in turn have an adverse affect on the child’s cornea and cause pink eye.

The link between smoking and vision problems has been clinically documented. This can also be tied to the growing number of Lasik operations performed each year. It is certainly clear that smoking has a devastating effect on the eyes of children and adults alike.

If You Can't Quit Smoking, At Least Get an Air Purifier

If you or someone in your home is a smoker, you're well aware of the lingering smell that cigarettes can leave in your home. The odor isn't the only problem, though. Cigarette smoke leaves all sorts of toxins and pollutants in the air and makes it unhealthy for everyone who enters your house. The best way to get rid of the problem is to quit smoking, but that isn't always the easiest course of action. Your next best move is to purchase an air purifier that can help to eliminate the harmful contaminants in the air around you.

An air purifier is an electronic appliance that cleans your air. It does this by getting rid of unhealthy particles in the air, including those left behind by cigarette smoke. There are a few different ways that various air purifiers work to do this. Many of them use a filter, some use ionic technology, and others use UV rays. All of these methods capture particles from the air and trap them inside.

However, not all air purifiers are equally efficient at getting rid of smoke smells and eliminating smoke particles. There are some models and technologies that perform better than others. In fact, many manufacturers have put quite a bit of research into developing filtering technology that is particularly well suited to the elimination of cigarette smoke from the air. In some cases, these products feature an extra filter, specially designed to eliminate smoke particles, which the more conventional filters are unable to trap.

The fact is that a home air purifier can't completely eliminate of all the contaminated air that's due to smoke. But that doesn't mean that you shouldn’t still do as much as you can. Even with smoke, you'll find that these products go a long way towards keeping the air cleaner and more breathable; they just don't completely eliminate the problem. The only way to do that is to stop smoking in the house.

When looking for an air purifier that will most effectively remove the smoke toxins from inside your house, start on the internet. You'll find a much larger variety of products online as compared to local retail stores. Retailers are often short on space, and aren't able to provide the full range of technology that's available. Particularly if you're looking for a product that will eliminate smoke, you want the best selection you can get.

Another advantage of shopping online is that you can find out more information about the various products. Before purchasing one of these products, you can read customer reviews for various models. That will be a big help in finding an air purifier that is most likely to be effective and worth the expense. And some air purifiers, especially those made specifically for dealing with smoke, can be quite costly. So it's essential that you do some research and know exactly what you're looking for before you buy anything.
